Endowments

The Department is forever indebted to these individuals and organizations who have demonstrated their compassion by creating these endowments.

Michael H. Carter, III And Walker P. Carter, JR. Memorial Fund

Established in honor of their sons Michael and Walker, this fund supports continuing education for Georgetown’s NICU Nursing staff.  The fund is intended to provide support for NICU professional training, education and development.  Distributions support tuition and other expenses associated with academic programs, conferences, and training programs including books, materials, travel costs, and other resources.

Janet and Walker Carter intended that this fund honor the memory of their sons by benefiting the people who made such a difference in their lives during their time in the NICU.

The Philip L. Calcagno, M.D. and Jeane and James Dixon Endowed Chair in Pediatrics

Funds to be used in support of ther chair for salary, teaching, research, and scholarly activities of the distinguished faculty member.

Edward’s Fund

Edward’s Fund, established in 1994, provides financial assistance to benefit children, including those with disabilities and their families, who are lovingly cared for in the Department of Pediatrics at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.  Income from the Fund supports medical and social programs and general amenities within the Department so that a child’s hospital stay can be a more healthful and pleasant experience.

In recent years, Edward’s Fund has fully supported the Artists-in-Residence Program, the Poets-in-Residence Program, the programs of Studio G, art therapy for patients and their families, visiting musicians and holiday parties.  Edward’s Fund also purchases audio-visual equipment for children’s rooms, DVDs, CDs, games to pass the time, rocking chairs for parents to help soothe the pain of a sick child, and anything else needed to create a child-friendly environment for patients and parents alike.  The Fund can also provide transportation so that relatives, who otherwise would be unable to afford the costs, can visit children in the Department.  Anyone who has had a loved one hospitalized, expecially a child, appreciates the anxiety and uncertainty that can accompany a hospital stay.  In this environment, Edward’s Fund seeks to provide the resources to make a child smile.

Edward’s Fund was established in memory of Edward R. Leahy, Jr., whose admissions to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital were frequent, but always filled with caring and compassionate professionals who often made him smile.

Frederica Ellis Children’s Fund

Established with an estate gift from the late Frederica Ellis, this fund’s purpose is to provide supplies, programs, and services to benefit children who are patients at the Hospital.  It was specifically used to renovate and equip the rooms in the pediatric ward with cable television.

Phyllis R. Magrab Endowed Chair

This Chair was established and named to honor the deep affection and gratitude for Dr. Phyllis R. Magrab’s vision and exemplary work in improving the quality of life for children who have or are at risk for developing learning, emotional, or developmental disabilities.  This work will continue through research, training, supportive services, and public policy initiatives provided by the Center for Child and Human Development.

Ian P. Rennert Endowment

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Study Abroad Program provides a structured program of education and training for third year pediatric residents at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital interested in pursuing a career in pediatric hematology/oncology or global health.  This elective exposes interested residents to the diagnosis, care, and treatment of cancers in global communities, helps them develop an increased understanding of the causes and predisposition to regionally important cancers, and teaches them about treatment protocols designed to improve survival rates and enhance the quality of life in patients with cancer.

The Ian Peter Rennert Graduate Research Award

Established by Dr. and Mrs. Owen Rennert in memory of their son, Ian Peter Rennert, this fund is used to support outstanding medical resident research.  Awards will be used to support research projects of residents in the field of pediatric oncology.

The Geraldine P. Waldorf Endowment

The Fund was established in December 2008 to recognize the commitment, dedication, and concern of Geraldine P. Waldorf to improve the quality of life for children and families, especially the world’s most vulnerable children.  Geraldine was the founder of the Friends of the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development (CCHD) – a group of business leaders and family and child advocates who recognized the enormous daily challenges confronting a staggering number of the world’s children.  Unfer Geraldine’s outstanding leadership in collaboration with the friends and many of the faculty, administrators, and staff of the Pediatric Department, particularly those at the CCHD, funds were raised to establish the Phyllis R. Magrab Chair.  It was her desire to establish this endowment to be linked to the work of the Phyllis R. Magrab Chair and that the proceeds be utilized for initiatives addressing children having – or at risk for developing – learning, emotional, or developmental difficulties.
