Beneficiary Programs
The theme for Community Pediatrics at Georgetown University Children's Medical Center is direct service in the context of education. The Department of Pediatrics has long recognized that a key mission for an academic medical center is to provide care to children who have limited access to quality pediatric providers and to provide those specialized services that can uniquely be offered by an academic center. Equally important to the department is the central mission of all university medical centers, the training of the next generation of physicians and other health professionals.
Georgetown's Department of Pediatrics has been a steadfast leader in providing pediatric care to underserved children in the District of Columbia. Georgetown's commitment to the community began in the 1970's with the creation of the Child Development Center. From it inception the Center has dedicated its programs to providing services to children with disabilities in the District while educating countless future professionals including pediatric residents, psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, nutritionists, and communication disorder specialists.
In the 1990's Georgetown dramatically expanded its community activities with the inauguration of the Pediatric Mobile Clinic. This doctor's office on wheels serves children with limited access to care right on their doorsteps. All Pediatric resident, many Georgetown medical and nursing students take a clinical rotation on the van. This program has expanded to the point where all pediatric residents provide community service one half day per week in underserved areas of the District.
Over the past ten years Georgetown has extensively expanded its community activities. These activities include the KIDS Clinic for the deaf, serving parents with hearing loss and their children; the Oncology outreach program that educates the classmates of children with cancer; the various adolescent outreach programs that support and educate high school students at risk for substance abuse; and the international adoption program which supports families both before and after adoption.
Through your generous donations, continued contributions and continued support of the Community Pediatric Programs at Georgetown University Children's Medical Center, these programs will expand, flourish, and make an important difference in the lives of our city's youngest residents.
